The Village School · Class of 2027

Taking problems apart today so they work better tomorrow

Halftone dot portrait of Ryan Yin

Intro

I'm a senior at The Village School, headed toward operations research. The goal is the intersection of business and mathematics, where the math can quietly improve the everyday decisions ordinary people make.

Outside of academics I watch a lot of movies and play every racket sport in existence (if it has a racket, I'm in). I like learning anything random (1.01365) and trying anything new. New people, new experiences. Maybe just live?

Stochastic biochemical modeling, University of Houstonresearch

Built a delayed stochastic simulation of a repressor protein that shuts down its own production, then made the delay queue lossy so a pending production event can be destroyed before it matures. Ran the study for Professor Ott's group on how loss affects oscillator precision.

06

Reinforcement learning for inventory control (ORSuite)ongoing

A firm can order from a fast expensive supplier or a slow cheap one, and the split is the whole problem. Modernizing that dual-sourcing environment in ORSuite, Professor Sinclair's open-source operations research library, and testing whether reinforcement learning agents beat the standard ordering heuristic.
